Confidence, Mars and Venus

Would you say you are a confident investor? Your answer to that question could give more insight into your investment approach than you might think.

Many recently published books and studies point out the behavioral differences between men and women when it comes to investing – with the trait of confidence, or lack thereof, identified as a key factor impacting our investment behavior.

Though women may feel comfortable managing the family’s purse strings, many say they lack the confidence and or knowledge to invest their money.1   In a recent Harris Poll, only 53 percent of the women had the confidence to invest, compared to 82 percent of men who stated they were confident investors.

Men were actually found to be more prone to overconfidence; and with overconfidence, they tend to overestimate their knowledge and the expected gains of trading.2

But for the women who overcome their reluctance about investing, a tempered level of confidence may serve them well. Some research has shown that women, because they are less confident about investing in general, trade less frequently, hold less volatile portfolios and expect lower returns than men do.3

A new study by Barclays Capital and Ledbury Research found that women were more likely to make money as investors in the financial markets, mostly because they didn’t take as many risks as men.

What can we take away from all this?  It seems that when it comes to confidence in investing - too much does not a good investor make! So, lest we aim to be moderately confident.
